US online advertising grew 32.5% in 2004,
and eMarketer projects that growth will slightly surpass
that pace in 2005.
Online ad spending for 2004 totaled $9.6 billion, exceeding
the previous revenue record, set in 2000, by nearly 20%.
Fourth quarter revenues alone totaled $2.69 billion, making
it the highest quarter ever reported. In addition, projections
for the coming years are strong.
"Interactive Advertising has clearly become a mainstream
medium and one that can no longer be ignored as a critical
piece of any marketing mix," says Greg Stuart, CEO
of the IAB.
In addition, the growth of high-speed Internet in the U.S.,
now estimated to be in over 50% of homes connected to the
Web, will further boost the medium in years to come, delivering
more sophisticated video and pay-per-view content — and
more varied advertising vehicles and revenues online.

Ad execs are upping online ad budgets. A new
Forrester Research survey finds marketers plan to increase online
ad spending, while
decreasing spending on traditional advertising. Nearly 85% of the
advertisers told Forrester that they plan to increase their online
ad budgets this year, with the increases averaging 25%. Almost
half of them plan to decrease spending in traditional advertising
channels like magazines, direct mail and newspapers to fund the
increases in online ad spending.
Online
consumers spend more than 1/3 of their time online—roughly
the same amount
of time they spend watching TV. Is it any wonder advertisers
are scrambling to re-allocate their advertising budgets to maintain
their market share and capture the attention of consumers with
today's Internet advertising opportunities.
Rich media, streaming video, Flash, interactive games... the
available products and services for advertising your message
are practically unlimited. Chances are you saw an advertisement
just this week that got your attention
because it was so different than other ads you've seen
before.
An effective advertising campaign requires coordination of
a company's broadcast, online, print, direct-mail and specialty
efforts. While advertising dollars are shifting in greater amounts
onto the Internet, the best campaigns are those that coordinate
several approaches to win customer mindshare. Our advertising executives
